Teeming markets, sidewalk cafés, massage and acupuncture clinics, centuries-old pagodas, sleek skyscrapers and ramshackle wooden shops selling silk, spices, baskets and handmade furniture all jockey for attention amid the surreal urban collage.

A highlight of any trip to Vietnam, Hoian is a town oozing charm and history, having largely escaped the destruction of successive wars. Once a sleepy riverside village, it’s now quite definitely a tourist town – with hotels, restaurants, bars, tailors and souvenir shops dominating the old center. Despite this air of reality, Hoi An’s charisma pervades.

The local People’s Committee periodically clamps down on touts, and while this doesn’t mean a completely hassle-free visit, a stroll down the street is usually more relaxed here than in Hue or Nha Trang. Hoian is pedestrian-friendly: the Old Town is closed to cars and the distances from the hotels to the centre are walk able. It’s a great place to hire a bike.

Hue was once ancient capital of Vietnam. A cruise on the Perfume River is a scenic way to explore Hue. Another highlight of the trip is Hoian. Spend your time walking over the Japanese Bridge, visiting the different Chinese Assembly Halls and pagodas.

PhongNha Caves are the complex of 14 grottoes situated in a region of limestone mountains in Ke Bang National Park. PhongNha Cave have a total length of 7,729 m. PhongNha Cave were listed as a World Natural Heritage Site in July of 2003 by Unesco. The Cham People has used PhongNha Cave as Buddhist sanctuaries in the 9 and 10 centuries. Visit the cave, you will have a chance to explore the remain of Cham altars and inscriptions inside the cave.

Hoa Lu: the remains are the temples dedicated to King Dinh and King Le, the two heroes who lived in 10th century and chose Hoa Lu to build the citadel of the capital city (from 968 to 1009) Trang An grottoes which is a gathering of 31 valleys, 50 cross-water caves, and home to 600 kinds of flora and over 200 kinds of fauna, many of them in the Red Book of Vietnam.

This trip to the Northwest highland of Mai Chau offers a balance of cultural and physical activities set amongst some northern Vietnam’s stunning natural landscapes. We trek for one and a half days through villages in Mai Chau and overnight in a White Thai village where we have opportunities to observe the local lifestyle of these minority people.
